First grade is THE critical year for reading development. It also has the greatest level of expected growth compared with any other grade. Stud nets are expected to grow 6 levels during the short year! This is why we do small group instruction. The magnetic letters and boards will help students with building and sounding out words. Guided reading gives me the opportunity to pull small groups of students who have similar skills to be able to give them individualized targeted instruction. Guided reading is one of my favorite times of the day and I am continually looking for new ideas and ways to teach my students that are struggling.
