I play music when I want students to work on a problem. After just a week or two of doing this, students automatically focus when music plays and get to work. This has been an especially big help for students with attention deficit issues. Currently, though, commercials often interrupt their work time. This definitely kills the focus of the class and ruins the transition to their time to attempt a new problem.
In addition to getting everyone to focus on their work, music gives students more energy and makes everything from algebra to pre-calculus more enjoyable. Students quietly tap their feet, move their heads, and even smile while performing difficult math problems.
I like to make my class like a game show for students and, when they answer questions correctly, often provide virtual "prizes" of everything from a new car to an ostrich ride. I like to include sound effects to generate more excitement. This was all especially important during virtual learning to keep student attention on math and away from all of the distractions in their homes. However, commercials often ruin attempts to play cheesy game show music or celebration sound effects.
This membership to Spotify will eliminate commercials and allow me to play specific songs and sounds when I need them. Thank you!!!
