My students are from a very poor neighborhood in Colorado. In fact, over 90% of them qualify to receive free or reduced lunch from the government. The majority of them do not have English spoken at home and must work extra hard to master two or three languages. Although having these challenges, I have discovered that my students have an inner drive to do better for themselves. All they need is a spark to inspire their progress. At my school, we work to create an environment where the students can be positively supported, in a structured environment, always leading towards a higher goal. In science, I want my students to see that it is not the "hard" subject but the subject that explains how the world works. My hope is to surround them with hands-on materials and experiences to bring that vision to life.
