These novels (Hatchet) will help my students learn to think critically about literature and find the courage within themselves to face adversity in a positive manner. Many of my students no longer enjoy reading and rarely read for pleasure. Through this novel, my student seem to find that love for reading once again. If students enjoy literature, they learn without realizing they are learning. "Hatchet" is one of those pieces of literature. Students relate to the main character because he experiences many of the same situations my students face in their lives. Because they relate to this character, the door is opened up for robust class discussions and critical-thinking make reading fun and enjoyable for my students.
