My students live in an urban school district where over 70% of the students qualify as socioeconomically disadvantaged under the federal definition. Located in the middle of a large urbanized area of southern California, the nearest undeveloped areas for hiking etc. are over 30 miles away. This makes learning environmental science a challenge since many of the students have never been in an environment other than a city or suburb.
