Tyler Elementary is a Title I Washington DC Public Elementary School. As an educator at our school as well as our school's STEM Committee Chairman and a retired engineer, I am tasked with developing projects to advance and promote STEM within our school community. I've come to the realization that the mandated DCPS elementary school curriculum and pacing does not allow for sufficient exposure to and exploration of critical biology concepts (especially microbiology or cell biology). I became concerned that our school did not have any working microscopes that could be used to study cell biology. My DonorsChoose project is intended to fill that educational void. Thus I am trying to raise funds to purchase a sufficient number of microscopes to support my underserved, disadvantaged students. My students are motivated, enthusiastic learners. They just need the tools to acquire the knowledge I wish to impart to them.
