Over the years, I have gotten students in the habit of including a story at the end of each lesson, if possible. Now that students anticipate this ritual and ask for more stories, the music library is in need of new titles! I am asking for stories that fit into the various music units I have: stories about jazz musicians, folk artists, famous composers, and Latin American musicians, as well as books based on well-known children's songs. Many of my students are not regularly read to, some may not even own books at home, thus limiting their exposure to literature. I found that by reading to my students, they become interested in stories, they are engaged, and the book gives them a lasting impression on our music lesson. Many of the books I picked out fit into our existing units. A few of the books not only educate students on composers, but also provides the teacher with project ideas to go along with the story. These books will help promote literacy with my students while continuing their musical education.
