Many students in 5th grade do not have access to technology at home or outside the school. Students are only able to access technology once a week in our school computer lab due to the budget cut. We know this is not frequent enough to truly prepare them to be college and career ready. Every day, I hear eager students ask, “Are we going to the lab on Friday to work on Khan Academy?” Many of my students come from difficult home lives, but when they walk through the door, they are excited to be at school so that they can learn. If 5th grade students at our school are able to have a set of Chromebooks for our classroom, they will be even more excited to come to class every day to learn. Our English Learners' and Diverse Learners' interest and engagement increases when utilizing technology as well, where they are able to access “just right” texts or skills on their own level through Khan Academy, which is also an advantage students will have if we had access to computers in class every day.
