"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. We ask ourselves, who am I to be beautiful, gifted, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?" The aforementioned quote by Marianne Williamson encapsulates our challenge to each of our students at Blow Pierce Middle School. It is our belief that each of our scholars has the ability to cultivate his or her education in a way that will grant him or her permission to be “powerful beyond measure.” It is our passionate belief that in order for our students to transcend the status quo they must do one thing frequently: read.
Dr. Suess expressed it best, “The more you read the more you know." The more you know the more places you will go.” For some of our students reading is dichotomous. It offers an escape into places that are currently out of their reach; however, it also offers hope as to what their lives one day can and will be like.
When I inquired about what would serve as the catalyst to spark a boost in their reading, our students asked for new books, ones that interest them and ones that reflect who they are. Our scholars generated this list of books and I am hoping this project will be selected so that our students can move one step closer to becoming avid readers, deep thinkers, reflective writers and all of which will allow them to be...“powerful beyond measure.”
