My school is comprised of minority students who come from families who suffer from poverty and live in an environment with high crime. There is a low emphasis on academic achievement. A high amount of efforts have been made to create a safe environment and a thriving school. My school is full of extremely talented students who enjoy and love art and art has had a positive impact on them academically. In spite of the surrounding neighborhood and personal challenges, my students are learning and expressing themselves in great ways through art and writing. Currently our school is in the process of transforming from a low-performing school into a 90-90-90 school. A 90-90-90 school has at least 90 percent minority students, 90 percent low-income students, and 90 percent of students who are academically proficient. Art reinforces the reading and language skills students learn daily at school.
