For the first time in my career, I will be teaching freshmen. Poetry is one of the units I will tackle, with nine weeks being spent on the topic. This particular book is written in verse, which will be the first time some students will be exposed to a book of this nature. This could make poetry more accessible to students who have struggled with it in the past. This novel is quite timely and will allow for informational texts to naturally fit into the curriculum, exposing students to issues that plague our current culture. The goal of education is to create more informed members of society. My hope is that Long Way Down will open up an inquisitive side to my students.
