My students are in the 8th grade and they attend a 5th-8th grade middle school in Arkansas. They are curious and hungry to research, interview, and create projects. This is difficult though because about half of my students do not have reliable technology at home. We are a school with a large free and reduced lunch population. Also, we only have 2 computer labs for 4 grade levels. Between the 9/11 Oral History Project and National History Day, we are using computers and the Internet on a daily basis for research, oral history website creation, creation of annotated bibliographies, process papers, and creation of NHD projects. When a student doesn't have internet access at home or a reliable computer to use, they struggle to participate and succeed in these projects and assignments. So, my students desperately need technology available in the classroom so that they can work on their oral history websites and National History Day projects at school.
