An after school club around sustainability will be in charge of maintaining the compost. All of the students will use gardening gloves when maintaining the compost pile and taking samples for experiments. All of the school will donate food into the compost pile. The earthworms will provide a real life example of decomposers in the cycling of matter on Earth. My biology classes will use the compost pile to collect data around cellular respiration of the earthworms using our CO2 probes. We also have temperature probes to study how temperature changes through the compost cycle. The students are very excited to help reduce trash in landfill.
