Our school is a Title I school, meaning at least 80% of students qualify for the free or reduced lunch. Our school also has a high population of non-native English speakers. My students are examples of perseverance and they overcome barriers daily. Tenacity here is the standard, and humbling. Language development in school is a key component to their success. Many of my students come from homes that do not overtly foster English language development. They come from a very low income areas. Their parents speak little to no English with low education backgrounds as well. Often times, my students are in charge of translating for their family members. School is the only place where they are explicitly taught English language skills. Through the use of the easel and other supplies requested, students can create and share their ideas with.
