In elementary music class we do units with drumming on congas and playing on xylophones, and sometimes playing both drums and xylophones together. Students love it, but it is definitely very loud. I always keep some ear plugs on hand for students who are particularly sensitive. Our walls are made of concrete blocks which reflect and amplify the sound made from the instruments. Foam acoustic panels are excellent at absorbing the sound and stopping it from reflecting. They will reduce the sound level in the room and make it more comfortable for students to play instruments. The music room also has white noise being produced from the heating and air system that has proven to interfere with students’ hearing and playing their instruments. The white noise will be absorbed by the panels and make it easier to hear my students sing and give answers in class.
