I have the ability to create change in my classroom and I want to do so by providing my diverse group of students with books that accurately represent them. I want them to be able to "see" themselves in stories that help other children understand their culture and background. I was once proud of my classroom library, until I recently went through it and came to the realization that not all of my students are depicted in the wonderful stories that already take up space on the shelves. I want to broaden my students' knowledge of cultures from around the world while allowing them to see themselves in books. Additionally, I would like my students to be caught up with current events that are taking place around the world with a TIME For Kids subscription. TFK makes current events accessible to students by presenting information to them in terms that they can understand. This last year there was no money in the school budget to purchase this and my students missed out on expanding their knowledge and understanding of our world. Once again, there is no money for this subscription and this would be valuable in helping them understand the world we live in.
