I teach at a selective enrollment public school on Chicago's south side, and my students are fantastically curious and motivated. About 70% of our students receive free and reduced lunch, and about 98% are African American or Hispanic. Our school is committed to providing a rigorous yet supportive learning environment, where, according to our mission and vision, "we are all teachers and learners." I learn so much from my students on a daily basis, and strive to teach them how fascinating and complex studying history can be. I teach Honors and AP World History to 10th graders, and although many of them entered my classroom assuming that history was a useless set of dates and facts, it is my goal to shake this assumption and open their eyes to the humanizing effects of studying the past.
