My students are of the lower socio-economic status on a military base. This being said, I teach a population of students who do not have the luxuries of most in this country. Most of my students do not know what it is like to live or travel off the military post because their families cannot afford it. My school was built in the 70's and because of the economic status, we do not have the funds to update our classrooms with the technology needed to keep up with the 21st century. I find that when I am working with my struggling readers, they do well listening to a book on tape allowing it to model fluency. But due to the older books on tape and the cassette players, students are not enthused about reading. I believe strongly that if I can use the technology of the modern world to download new books and allow them to control it through an iPod, not only is it going to capture their attention and interest, but they will enjoy reading and build their reading skills. Please help them. :-)
