I work with Special Education students in a Title I Priority School in Georgia. I serve these students both inside the general education classroom, and in the self-contained setting. I emphasize to my students regularly that their IEPs are in place because they learn differently than other students, not because they cannot learn. Many of my students become frustrated because they do not understand the content as it is presented, or because they cannot express themselves in traditional ways, such as writing an essay. This is where technology comes in. Students that couldn't understand a lecture can gain instant understanding by watching a short film created on iMovie, or by having easy classroom access to a podcast on the subject they are studying. Having access to a portable device right in the classroom allows these students instant remediation opportunities so that they can work in the general ed classroom with their peers & learn how to access instructional aids to use anytime.
