My students are third graders in an urban city in CT. Our school's philosophy involves students creating and experiencing learning through integrated curriculum, social learning, and arts-integration. We have been studying the Native Americans of the northeast in conjunction with language arts. In addition, the students have been researching with partners and small groups other tribes, based on geographic location. To further enrich their knowledge, we would like them to learn how to create and participate in Native American crafts- make maracas, false-face masks, corn husk dolls, wampum, medicine pouches, etc, as related to the tribes they studied. In addition, we would like to have them teach their peers in a celebration of learning...Native American Day! All students are welcome to visit, create crafts, and learn from individual students how and why Native Americans would have used and made their craft.
