I am requesting reading materials for the struggling first grade readers at my school. We are a Title I school with many families who are economically disadvantaged. Many children enter kindergarten without the advantage of a preschool experience. As a result, they are already behind when they start school. We work hard to close the gap in kindergarten, but must continue with this focus in first grade. The students read leveled books (progressively more difficult) and are often successful at the early levels, A-C. As the books become more challenging, they need more practice in the next set of levels, D through I. It is at this point where they also must work on their fluency so that their comprehension will not be adversely impacted by word-by-word reading. At this time in the school year my first graders are ready for the challenge of Levels D and higher. We would like to increase the number of books available to them at these levels.
