I teach English in an urban public high school with a strong medical preparatory program. Most of my students are ambitious, competitive, and practical, though they have often grown up in very challenging circumstances and still face daily hurdles to stay focused on their education. My passion is helping students to develop their voice and to give them a stage on which to speak. Through numerous partnerships with arts and civic organizations in our city, I give them opportunities to see themselves as actors, even leaders, on a larger stage. I coach a spoken-word poetry team, partner with a major theater to take students inside the arts, travel abroad with students, and work with service learning organizations to involve students in politics and civic action.
