As you walk into Ms. Molina's classroom, you will find smiling faces working collaboratively to solve equations. Some will be counting on their fingers, some using their knowledge of TouchMath, and others using tick marks on scratch paper. My classroom is very racially diverse, half of my students are English Language Learners, and nearly all receive free or reduced lunch. On top of their learning disabilities, many of my students grapple with emotional issues due to trauma. From being exposed to drug abuse to witnessing violence in their community, my students have faced many obstacles in their lives. One of my students was in an out of foster homes where he was abused regularly and another student witnessed his older brother get shot in front of his house. For many of my students, school is their safe haven.
