My students love to write about themselves and share stories about their lives. What better way to do that and give them the opportunity to learn about others than memoirs? Memoirs give students the opportunity to read about other people, their lives, and different cultures. Students then use these mentor texts to pen their own memoir. Writing about themselves gives them a creative writing outlet as well as an opportunity to share a bit about themselves with their peers. This unit not only helps student connect with cultures around the world, but also builds community in the classroom. Each year students enjoy learning about others and sharing a little about themselves too!
