My fifth grade students come from a low income area where there is an extremely high Spanish speaking population. For most of my students English is their second language and they have a very difficult time with reading. They lack the vocabulary and language skills needed in order to be a successful reader. For many of my students, the only time they hear English is at school because their parents only speak Spanish. My students would benefit greatly from a listening center. This listening center contains books that are age appropriate and will hold my students' attention. This center will also improve their fluency and comprehension which are two skills needed to become a good reader. I want my students to develop a love of reading and not just read because they have to. I believe that this listening center will not only improve my students reading but instill a love of reading as well.
