I am a Kindergarten teacher in a rural, economically challenged town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. A large percentage of my students live in poverty and over eighty percent qualify for free or reduced price lunch at school. They do not enter school with the background knowledge and skills needed to succeed and I want to give them the opportunity to love learning, gain confidence, and know that they are capable of becoming whatever they would like to be in life! Learning to read and write can be overwhelming for young children and I want to make it fun and give them ownership of their skills. Our budget has been cut and we need new white boards, pens, and desk dividers. Over the nineteen years I have been teaching, I have spent thousands of dollars of my own money to supply the needs of my students, but with the economy the way it is, I could really use some help from DonorsChoose to give my students a boost with their writing skills by having access to these items.
