The school where I teach is the most diverse of any Portland, Oregon public high school: 23% of students are African American, 19% Hispanic, 16% Asian, 2% Native American, and 36% Caucasian. Many of my students struggle with challenges outside of school. Over 70% of our students are below the poverty line. Many students are in the foster care system or are homeless. Many are recent immigrants learning English as a second language. My students use their diversity to their advantage, learning from each others' interesting life experiences. They are vibrant and hungry for a chance to make a difference in the world. In its first year, 95 students signed up for 30 openings in this Peace Studies class. Students enrolled in the class participate in the school's Peer Mediation Program. These students care about social justice, and they are excited about the possibility of helping change Portland for the better.
