My students attend an urban school for the physically disabled. Ninety percent of my students have Cerebral Palsy; a group of disorders that affect a person's ability to move and to maintain balance and posture. Most are wheelchair bound, but some are able to move throughout the building using walkers. All of our students have medical conditions that prevent them from attending traditional school, as the settings would not accommodate their individual needs. However, my students have fabulous spirits and they rarely complain. They strive to fit in and be like other teenagers. Cerebral Palsy has affected most of my students cognitively, as well as physically. My goal is to have my students read the same stories that their peers are reading across the city. If Romeo and Juliet is in the 9th grade curriculum, then I will adapt, modify, and teach Romeo and Juliet! This year we will read Julius Caesar, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Hunger games! Very exciting!
