I call it the big three: math, reading, and writing. Expectations have increased year after year as students are increasingly capable of retaining a variety of academic skills. But one thing I've learned throughout my career is that the social curriculum is just as important, if not, more so in elementary classrooms. Play is the most important part of our day; in or outside of school. Play gives students the practice they need in order to communicate effectively, express their feelings, share, demonstrate their creativity, and practice problem-solving skills. Legos are the perfect toy to accomplish all of these things! Over the past few years, I've collected Lego bricks from here and there. I've stalked Facebook sale pages looking for Legos at a reasonable price, as I quickly realized how expensive they were. Although, despite the expense, I understood their value to students as a way to develop a classroom community. My collection consists of a shoe box full of Legos and a few plates for students to build upon. They huddle around that box like they're looking at the Hope diamond. My own hope is to provide them with more of a valuable tool that will be fun for years to come!
