My sixth grade math students all come from inner city homes in zones of poverty. Nevertheless, their spirits soar in our classroom as each day they articulate math problem solving strategies and then test these strategies and draw conclusions. This work requires not only basic math skills and number sense, but an environment of trust in which every child feels fully supported and valued. Team-building activities such as group rhythm circles help create this environment while simultaneously opening neural passageways to improve academic focus and creativity. To make my program successful I have recently become a certified facilitator in two drum circle protocols ("Beat the Odds" and "HealthRHYTHMS") formulated for improving health and school success in adolescents. As part of my program I will monitor key outcomes such as test scores, classroom participation and overall student behavior, in order to offer insights for the future use of rhythm circles in the academic classroom.
