Our class attends a local public elementary school in Oregon. It is made up of a wide variety of students. We have nine languages represented in our classroom alone. 22 out of the 32 come from families that speak another language at home. We have students from Burma, Somalia, China, Vietnam, Ukraine, Russia, and Mexico. Although I am not privy to the specifics of my classroom, about 90% of our school is considered to be from poverty. Most of my students do not get many opportunities for exposure to experiences (be it science, literature, musical, and museums unless we provide it for them. We have 22 boys and 10 girls in our room, so active activities are essential. Many of my students will say their favorite subject is science, and I am looking forward to exploring it with them, as I very much enjoy science as well.
