Our students need to be able to read at home in both their language of instruction and their native languages. We have many English books to fulfill the need to practice reading in English. However, we have two issues which impact our ability to provide enough Spanish reading materials for students to take home. We have both a Spanish Immersion program and a high number of Spanish speaking families. Many of our families have difficulty finding books in Spanish, and with nearly 70 percent of our families living in poverty, even more simply can't afford them.
