This Art Matters project will support a weekly art activity for my special needs students which is intended to lessen all students' level of frustration, increase self-esteem, and reduce stress. A wall in my room will showcase student work. An art cabinet loaded with art canvases, brushes, disposable pallets, and water cups will support the project for the entire school year. My students can store and easily find what we need for our Friday Paint Day. The Friday Paint Day will provide students with a sense of normalcy and allow them to engage in an activity they are otherwise denied by being in special education. Since they lose an elective in order to get significant academic support, they are unable to actively participate in elective art classes. Therefore, this activity will provide them with an experience their general education peers have access to but they do not. This art activity will reduce anxiety because students don't have to do academics and lower frustration because it will not be graded and their art work is theirs to take home. Using the requested acrylic paints, brushes and disposable canvases, students will engage in an orderly art lesson that has them follow a guided template that is structured but allows for free expression. It is my goal for this activity to become something students look forward to because it reduces the stress and pressure of school.
