Our school is a Title 1 school with a population that is 60% Hispanic with the majority of students on free or reduced lunches. Many of these students have no extra help at home for homework or educational support. Because they have not had the extra academic or technical support in their early educational experiences, they feel inadequate and are less motivated because they don't understand why they need to learn. Our school is a Charter school, which means that we have a little more freedom in designing our classrooms and choosing our curriculum materials. With a focus on reading to learn and 21st Century Learning skills, we would like to teach our children the necessary research, writing and learning skills to prepare them for the future.
