I have the honor of teaching special education in Oakland. Our class is racially diverse and composed of Black, Latino, and Asian students with various special needs. Many of my students are first-generation immigrants, English Language Learners, and all qualify for free lunch. More than half have faced severe trauma in their lives such as being exposed to drugs and violence, the death of parents, and living in foster homes. They also face obstacles caused by their lack of access to modern technology. The lack of technology impedes my young scientists'€™ progress. Despite their harsh realities, if you were to walk into Mr. A's Lab, you would find scientists making observations, hypothesizing, and drawing inferences. Yet, my class is missing one major element. My students are not learning skills that will make them successful in the 21st century because they lack the technological resources. Our school simply does not have the resources to take my students to the next level.
