My students attend school in a rural area and range in age from 4-9. They are identified with speech/language impairment. Some specifically with apraxia of speech which is a speech disorder that makes it challenging to accurately produce speech sounds on a consistent basis. These children often have to "make sense" of the signals their brain is sending to the mouth in order to accurately produce sounds and place them in the right sequence to form words. Typically, the information that the brain sends to the lips, tongue, jaw and palate often get disorganized in transit causing speech errors and affecting the way words are produced. They have to figure out how to organize this information so the speech muscles make accurate movements to correctly produce sounds, words and sentences. Because their speech is unclear or unintelligible, these students often feel a sense of failure and frustration because of their inability to communicate. How would that feel?
