I am a Peer Resources Coordinator at a middle school in a high need community. Peer Resources is a youth leadership program which operates in over 20 middle and high schools in our city. The focus of our program is to train youth to be effective leaders in the school community so that they can help their peers to achieve and succeed. Additionally, Peer Leaders strive to make the school a more positive environment for students. Peer Resources is an elective class at the seventh and eighth grade level. Each class is working on different projects to improve our school community and support its students. I teach the elective class as well as help to coordinate the youth-driven projects. Some of these projects include peer mentoring, conflict mediation, a positive school climate program, lunchtime clubs and activities, and peer education workshops. Peer Leaders are busy!
