My students, both Prekindergarten and Kindergarteners, have been taking the Dr. Seuss challenge and reading all the 50 sight words that he used to write his classic Green Eggs and Ham book. They have been practicing for weeks and many are now ready to publically demonstrate that they can read every word he used in the book. Once a student has mastered the words, they are presented with their own copy of Green Eggs and Ham to keep in their home. The students use many strategies to learn these words and sometimes have to make many attempts. Their level of determination, perseverance and support for each other deserves the reward of owning their very own copy. Although my students come from a variety of economic situations many of them do not have the privilege of owning their own book...especially one that they have worked so hard to get. We started this project last year and the students that participated in it all began their Kindergarten year already having mastered many of the sight words that they needed to master by the end of this school year. They remembered the pride they felt when they received their book and many reported that they continued reading it over and over throughout the summer break. The confidence this project gave them has made them believe that they are "readers" and are capable of mastering anything if they persist.
