These students need mentors and experiences that are outside of the classroom restraints and curriculum. This is an urban school in an economically disadvantaged (poverty)community with over 90% free or reduced lunch. The student population is diverse with a large portion of English as a second language coming from refugee camps, Kenya, South America and Somalia. According to reports from the state test results our subgroups: economically disadvantaged, African Americans, students with disabilities and limited English proficient populations are in need of the most support. STEM club staff have reached out and deliberately selected students from these subgroups.
