We are a small Title One middle school located in a very low-income area of Los Angeles County. The student population consists predominantly of English Language Learners (approximately 98% are Spanish speaking). However, despite the challenges that come with being a Title One school, we are one of the top ranking schools in the area. Most of our students have a strong desire to learn and are hard working. They understand the connection between a quality education and a successful future. They are determined to dispel the stereotypes that are associated with low-income communities. To help our students prepare for the careers of the future, we designed our curriculum with a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) focus. Our elective classes comprise of courses such as robotics, Lego building, MESA (math competition), forensic, and medical exploration (which is what I teach). To keep the consistency, the principles of STEM are also embedded in our core classes.
