I work in a low income area of a large city. Our school is near 60 years old and has a very old kiln that the principal was going to get rid of unless someone started using it. That someone was me. I took a class and then jumped in with both feet. I work with about 100 First Graders. They are from many nationalities and usually come speaking languages other than English. They have never worked with ceramic clay or even knew what a kiln was. I collected all the old clay from the other teachers who had stored it away in their rooms, not knowing how to use the kiln. I roll it out by hand and then give it to my students. We have made Christmas Tree ornaments, toilet paper roll vases, and entries into the Reflections competitions. The students are fascinated with how the clay changes as we fire it. It allows all of the students to express themselves, without needing to speak English. They bring their own culture and ideas to their creations.
