I am requesting sensory materials to help encourage hands on exploration through a variety of tactile materials. Technology devices such as cell phones, tablets and gaming systems have hindered our young students hand development creating a lack of strength in their little fingers. There is a lack of the hands on, let's get dirty, environmental exploration play that helps create the strength and skill needed for hand/finger coordination and dexterity. The age of technology has hurt more than helped our little ones hand development. I am hoping the light table and accessories along with a variety of other materials will help encourage my students, specifically my students with Autism, to explore in a way that is exciting and meaningful to them. So many of our students experience sensory issues from the lack of exposure to different tactile materials, my request will give them the ability to explore with their hands. Over the years I have observed a decline in my students ability to utilize their hands for the basic foundation skills such as coloring, painting and learning to cut with scissors. They are unable to hold a writing utensils appropriately and have difficulty using their fingers to manipulate classroom materials. They lack the hand skills and strength that are developed through hands on tactile play. They don't even like to get their hands dirty!!!! What happened to making mud pies, finger painting, play-dough and water play? These are the experience I want to bring back into my classroom. I want them to explore and feel with their hands not swipe on a tablet.
