I have 21 amazing third graders who come to me from all facets of life. They are excited about the magical journey of reading. They are eager to learn, but unfortunately we do not have the funding to purchase class sets of books for our students so that each student has access to the text. We are a non Title I school and over the last several years our socioeconomic status has shifted. We have a student body exceeding 620 students, and of those students 42% receive free and reduced lunch. Our students come to us with wide ability levels, many entering our classroom below grade level. We need to change this outcome and provide our students with opportunities to become immersed in rich text as well as expose them to both narrative and traditional nonfiction.
