I have taught 6 years in a middle school with approximately 1000 students (grades 6-8) in rural Pennsylvania. My students are athletes, musicians, readers, hunters, gamers, skaters, artists - all capable of changing the world. Despite limited resources, diverse student needs and increasing educational demands, our school continues to be a "School to Watch" and focus on meeting students' needs: academically, socially, and emotionally. My students have high goals they need to meet in today's 7th and 8th grade math classes. Not only do students in both grades need to prepare to demonstrate proficiency on the PCS PSSA Mathematics Test, but if enrolled in Algebra I they also need to demonstrate proficiency on the PA Algebra I Keystone Exam, which is a high school graduation requirement. In order for students to succeed in such an intense curriculum and gain interest in STEM, I typically engage the students through technology, cross-curricular projects and small group remediation.
