Our school is one of the most diverse in the state of Oregon. We have over twenty languages spoken by students who attend our school. While this diversity is a wonderful aspect of our school, unfortunately that diversity brings other challenges with it. Our school has one of the highest poverty rates in the state, meaning that our students do not have access to a plethora of reading materials. The district does its best to replace damaged or run-down novels, but often those funds are directed to other areas of need. Our students face many challenges, and whenever they can read a story about characters overcoming challenges and learning the difference between right and wrong, the kids become empowered to succeed. So many of our students are ready to tackle the challenges that their generation faces, but they lack the resources to solve some of those problems. Our school works to show students what potential they have and how they can use that potential as they navigate adolescence.
