The novels will be used in class and for those who are continuing with remote learning to try to engage students and teach them to enjoy reading. The two novels chosen in this project reflect scenarios and hardships that my students have endured. The resources for social and emotional learning are to help students to deal with the trauma they have experienced, while in a safe and encouraging environment. They can learn to lead fulfilling lives despite some of the hardships they have encountered and realize the importance of education is one of the first steps. I want to incorporate SEL into my English class so students will learn to be more resilient while learning reading and writing. My students need more supports than the average student, and that is what I am trying to provide. Although most of the work I do with them is in the classroom, the skills and strategies they will learn through the novels and the SEL resources will be helpful in everyday life and help promote lifelong learning. They will learn coping strategies while reading interesting novels. These coping techniques can have a dramatic impact on their lives, not only educationally, but also on their personal lives and relationships.
