65% of my students are children of color who come from culturally diverse backgrounds, including Somali and Sudanese refugees who have overcome tremendous challenges before arriving in Maine. They often speak several languages prior to learning English & courageously face the process of adjusting to school at the same time that they are acclimating to the customs & geography of a new city and country. They attend an urban school that is currently restructuring its curriculum and community supports in order to better meet the educational, social & emotional needs of its students. The teachers, social workers and other staff are extraordinarily committed individuals who give of their personal time & resources on weekends & summer breaks to provide students with extended care & learning. The students are eager, enthusiastic and resilient in their academic, social and emotional engagement. They are truly inspiring!
