My students are bright, interesting, and inquisitive. They aspire to learn about themselves, their community and the world. Sadly, my students live in a world where reading is not part of their daily home lives. Most families lack the resources to provide students with a variety of books to read much less a space to read comfortably and quietly. Consequently, some students lack the motivation and stamina to pick up a good book and lose themselves in it. When visiting another classroom with a cozy reading area, I noticed that even struggling readers appeared engaged in their books. My students' eyes gleamed when I showed them an image of a library full of bean bags and pillows that students lounged in. They quickly asked why they didn't have a space to "hang out" and bean bags to sit in while reading. When I asked how a cool space could help them learn I received a variety of responses ranging from, "I would go to the library more and read more," to "I would have more fun learning."
