My students are 94 curious, smart, determined, and resilient first graders at a charter school in a low-income neighborhood. My students love school, and they get excited about everything - a new pencil, an addition chant, any number greater than 100. They ask endless questions and always want to understand why and how math works. My students need an opportunity to explore numbers with their hands so that they gain a concrete understanding of math. Our school is a Title I school in San Jose. 84% of my students receive free or reduced lunch, and 71% are English language learners. Despite the challenges my students face at home, they are committed to their education at age 6 and know that being the first child in their family to attend college can and will change their life trajectory.
