I teach in a low income school district. Many of my students come from single parent homes. As a kindergarten teacher, I am trying to establish the framework for learning and help my students develop a love of reading and writing. My students begin their first school experience without supplies or the support they need from home. Each year, many students enter kindergarten without out any educational background. They do not know letters, sounds, colors or shapes. Many have never been read to or have heard a nursery rhyme. They begin lacking the background knowledge most children in affluent districts have. I need to provide them with as many exciting and fun filled experiences in school to encourage a love of learning.
